I was eight-years-old when I decided I wanted to be a teacher.
Faced with the first of many social rejections in what became a lifelong struggle with isolation and loneliness stemming from the intersection of physical ailments, undiagnosed neurodiversity, and cultural differences, I felt disappointed when my teacher at that time was unable to help me connect better with my peers. In that moment, I remember deciding that I would one day try to be for others what my favorite teacher had not been able to be for me.
Many years later, well into my own career as an educator, mentor, and facilitator for adults and children, realized that while I absolutely loved supporting my students’ academic growth, the moments I felt the most fulfilled were those when I got to help someone connect with themselves emotionally or spiritually in a way that supported their personal growth and mental health.
In short, what I had always really wanted to be was a counsellor.
Over the course of my own personal healing journey, I learned that accepting and acknowledging the uniqueness of my individual differences with compassion and curiosity was the precursor to building meaningful and aligned connections with others. It takes courage and time, but it is possible to find people who fill our cup and bring new layers of growth and understanding to our lives. It is through understanding our past that we can make new and more empowering choices for our future.

That gentle invitation and call to courage from my first counsellor many years ago has been my guiding light in seeking out and connecting to the deeper layers of myself with compassion and acceptance. This path to inner healing is also the inspiration for Bright Wings Wellness Counselling.
